About the School

Classes in the School

The FCT School for the Blind Children in Jabi, Abuja, consists of seven different classes: ECC Ed, Primary 1, Primary 2, Primary 3, Primary 4, Primary 5, and a Special class.

ECC Ed

This class includes the youngest children, who are typically around 3 years old.

Primary 1

This class teaches students the basics of braille, the use of a stylus, and other specialized techniques to aid the blind.

Primary 2

This class continues to advance the student’s skills in braille, paper, and stylus; they begin to learn how to navigate around the school.

Primary 3

The students continue to advance their skills in navigating the school using their techniques, such as detecting the path’s rocks and staying on track.

Primary 4

The students master how to distinguish between sand and rock, as well as identify where the pathway’s ledges are.

Primary 5

This class includes the oldest children, who are typically 10 years old.

Special Class

This class is for students with more severe blindness or other physical disabilities. They receive extra care and attention on learning how to use a cane to navigate the school.

“To navigate through the school, we teach them a subject called ORIENTATION AND MOBILITY. It enables them to be familiar with their environment through the use of a mobility cane. To a very large extent, they are conversant with the location of their classrooms, dining hall, school clinic, etc, and can access those places unaided.”

Clubs

As of 2024, the FCT School for Blind Children has five clubs. They continue to expand and are planning to start a music club in the future.
